My friend VintagePealrs (Jill) vintagepearls.deviantart.com/
is currently running an IndieGoGo campaign to help her build up her costuming business and expand her cosplay and I strongly encourage you to read through her project yourself here: www.indiegogo.com/projects/hel…
She's very talented and does a lot of traditional artwork and has been getting more and more into cosplay these last few years and is really pushing her costume work! Looking to expand and get the word out about her business, she's turned to crowdfunding to experience the power of the crowd herself! You can support her and her future works by sharing her project online and of course becoming a backer yourself!
Here's a bit from her project page talking more about what she's doing: (Though you should really just jump to the page to see more yourself)"The Impact:
The cosplay culture is rapidly growing and is heading to a lucritive place where I believe it will be good to have a strong foothold (the best example of this growth is cosplayer Anna Moleva being hired by Irrational Games to be on the cover/promo art for their 2013 smash hit video game Bioshock Infnite). By going to these conventions, the amount of exposure alone is invaluable. Last year at NYCC I debuted my Lutece Twins cosplay, and we were literally surrounded by people taking pictures the whole day (so much so we didn't even get to see any of the con!). Not only was the general public posting us online but web sites including BusinessInsider.com, TheEscapist.com, Complex.com, and Dorkly.com were adding us to their "best of" lists the following Monday. Going to the cons listed above will hopefully triple that exposure.
At these cons I not only plan to hand out business cards and stop for every photo asked but network with people already in the industry. Well-known, esteemed cosplayers are invited every year to cons to have a meet-and-greet booth, and big names in the video game, television, and movie industries also attend. Established costumers with businesses go and have booths as well. Getting to speak to these people to let them know me and my business exists (as well as getting any advice I can) is paramount. Depending on how much is raised I might try passing out/posting flyers."
